Movies, you disappoint me. Not because you haven’t given me cool explosions or over-the-top CGI, and the occasional tearjerker when the wife starts bugging me about the two previous listed items, but because you have forgotten about one of the most cherished elements us moviegoers love…The catch phrase!
Don’t believe me? Rattle off the first catch phrase you can think. Uh huh…Was it something from the 80s or 90s? Yeah, I thought so. Movies, I’m still waiting for a new “Show me the money!” or “Yippe-ki-yay, mother****er!” And I’ve waited long enough. If all you can offer is “I drink your milkshake!”–you fail. Yes, it was a noteworthy phrase that spawned an SNL skit, but the lifespan was several months at best.
I can rattle on and on about all our favorites from the 80s and 90s. Heck, the entirety of Clueless is one giant catch phrase! Not to mention, you’re letting television kick your butt at your own game. “That’s what she said,” The Office. “I’m Rick James B*tch!” The Chappelle Show. “I’m on a boat,” SNL. Must I go on?
So the 2000s might not have been your decade. There’s only so long one can reign at the top. I get it. But now is your chance to take back the throne! It’s summer, the time where you give us your blockbusters and where cinema is king! With movies like Iron Man 2, The A-Team, Predators, and The Expendables all set to release this summer, there are no more excuses.
With that said, movies, I hope you listened, and I’ll be seeing you….I hope not sporadically!
