Katharine Hepburn & Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen | © Paramount Pictures

With this year’s release of The African Queen on Blu-ray, I have been found myself recently catching up on classic movies that set the foundation for film today. There are so many wonderful pictures that were made before I was born. Film classes, websites and the AFI top 100 are great resources when searching for a movie to watch, but I have found that my grandparents are actually my favorite resource as a go-to-guide for classic films.

When I asked my grandmothers and my parents what their favorite films are I received a much longer list than I expected—Gone with the Wind was a big favorite, as was Some Like it Hot. They also shared the memories they associated with some of their top movies. My grandmother remembers going to the local theater to catch the recent flick and always looked forward to the next Clark Gable film. My mom recalls watching The Wizard of Oz at the one house in her neighborhood that had a color television. After seeing one of her favorites, Singin’ In the Rain, my grandma was inspired to get taps for her shoes and remembers tap dancing around the house.  My parents loved Casablanca and decided to use “As Time Goes By” for their first dance at their wedding.

Sharing your favorite films with those in your family is one way to make sure the classics are never forgotten.  My mom is very fond of Alfred Hitchcock and passed this fondness down to me.  She introduced me to Psycho and took me to Bodega Bay where the schoolhouse and other scenes of The Birds were filmed. It would be unfortunate if my kids never experienced The Thin Man, How Green Was My Valley, The Last Detail and Cool Hand Luke.

I wonder what will be our generations stand out films? Lord of the Rings, American Beauty, The Hurt Locker? There are too many to chose from.  Luckily, the studios keep putting classics on Blu-ray for a new generation to discover. Personally, I am looking forward to re-watching my Blu-ray of Bonnie and Clyde.

We’d now like to take a moment with one of Click Communications’ excellent staffers, Emily Ronkar, to learn a little more about where she came from and how she gets by in the world of Click.  Learning from past mistakes, a fireside chat was much better during the summer when not lit.  Let us begin.

What is your favorite thing about working at Click?
Working at Click has given me even more reason to love movies.  Never in a million years would I have guessed that someone would pay me do what I loved.  My absolute favorite thing about working at Click, though, would have to be the people. Everyone at Click is so unique and nerdy in his or her own way and yet so accepting of everyone else’s unique rhythms. It always provides a fun environment.

What skill has been most valuable to you while working here at Click?
A sense of humor, hands down.  Whether things are going your way or you feel like the whole world is against you (I’m talking to YOU, Mondays), a sense of humor will always make the situation easier.

What would you consider to be your area of specialty?
Professionally, I get to work on a lot of  TV on DVD.  It’s fun to pull scenes while I watch both shows I love as well as shows I normally wouldn’t sit down to view, so my knowledge of TV is extensive.  Due to the sheer amount of material, it also provides a nice wide range of bonus material to satisfy any area of interest.  I also enjoy many of the Jerry Bruckheimer films; the action-focused behind-the-scenes bonus are always fun to watch and make you feel like you’re being let in on all the secrets of film-making.

For fun, I’m a huge fan of British TV and film, so I enjoy really off-kilter shows such as “Spaced,” “Coupling,” “Young Ones” or “The IT Crowd.” I’m also particular to the jovial sarcasm and wit offered in British cinema, most particularly in films such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Closer or Trainspotting. And of course, nothing soothes the nerves better than a classic Jane Austen story of bumbling romance; somewhere deep inside, I am still a sappy 13 year old girl.   It will be our secret.

What is the best part of your workday?
The first couple of hours before, and as, people start trickling in and answering e-mails.  It’s so quiet, just my coffee and me.  The day still holds the promise of productivity and my to-do list is at its shortest.

Which work event has been the most fun for you to be involved in?
Can I pick two?  No?  Well I will anyway.

Our annual Click Anniversary party is a lot of fun.  We get to spend some quality time together as a team with our out of town Clickers.  And it’s always fun to meet and spend a little time with our press, whom I don’t normally get to work directly with.

Secondly, Comic-Con.  This year was my second Comic-Con and the experience keeps getting better, and after each one, my plan of attack changes a little.  Yes, it’s crowded, and by the end of the week a bit smelly and apparently stabby (Hall H.  Get it together), but any event that celebrates nerds to the Nth degree is all right by me.  Let your freak flag fly.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
From a friend/former employer: “Just fix it.”  No matter what the problem, standing around with your hands in your pocket picking apart the issue or passing the puck doesn’t solve the problem any faster.   Just fix it.

What are some of your favorite movies?
This list is extensive, but here are a few: Shaun of the Dead, Pirate Radio, Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, Pride & Prejudice (the six-hour A&E version), Princess Bride and Disney’s Robin Hood.  If you’re looking for a pattern, or favorite genre, let me know how that works out for you.

“As Mr. Sloan always says, there's no 'I' in team, but there is an 'I' in pie. And there's an 'I' in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team...I don't know what he was talking about.”

If I looked in your DVR/BD player, what would I find?
You’d have good odds to assume it’s British.  Most likely Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Persuasion or Pirate Radio.  I’m also a huge fan of TV on DVD, so it’s also possible you’ll find Criminal Minds or Bones.

What book are you currently reading and what else might I find on your shelves?
I’m usually reading three books at a time.  Currently, Killing the Shadows by Val McDermid, The Other Queen by Philippa Gregory, and Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock ‘N’ Roll Generation Saved Hollywood by Peter Biskind.  I recently finished the comic Fables based on Mac’s suggestion, which I loved!  Most of what you’d find on my shelves are murder thrillers and historical fiction with a specific focus on the Tudor family.  Oh, and every bookshelf staple: Harry Potter.

Where in the world is your favorite place to travel or spend a dream vacation?
This one also has two answers:

Favorite place: London.  An amazing city that opens up new doors and wonders every time I visit.  Wonderful, friendly people that make me feel welcome and at home.  Beautiful buildings and architecture and if you ever get tired of the city, you’re just a train ride away from a plethora of small country villages.

Dream vacation: I would love to wine taste my way through Italy.  Definitely on the to-do list of my life.

London Calling

London Calling

Obligatory super power question: What would it be and why?
Flying, no question.  Not only would you get places faster and NOT have to pay extortionate airline prices and sit next to chatty people, but you also gain a whole new perspective of life from above the crowd.  Plus, amazing party trick.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

Didn’t make it to Comic-Con? Never fear, true-believer, we’ve got your back. Well, bag anyway. Or in this case, bags.

In the sea of booth babes and street teams, we collected way more swag than we could ever use. And now, for one lucky nerd out there who wasn’t able to make it, we’ve assembled a lovely “I Missed Comic-Con And All I Got Was This Lousy Goodie Bag” bag. And what a bag it is.

But wait! There's more! Bags, that is.

“What’s inside?”, you ask? Well, for starters, MORE BAGS. Comic-Con is all about how many bags you have. 5, 10, 20, it’s never enough. You need more bags to carry the bags you have. And God forbid you collect any swag or buy any exclusive toys, because then you need, you guessed it, another bag! So there’s plenty of bags.

On the knick-knack front, we have such things as an Alien Facehugger on a stick, buttons from “The Walking Dead” and “Dexter”, as well as bookmarks and other miscellaneous bits & pieces.

On the Gold Class level, we have some high & mighty treasures, such as the “Starro” mask from Mattel’s Justice League of America toy line, Kenny Powers’ “Eastbound and Down” mullet-cap and a Scott Pilgrim T-shirt.

Then on the Platinum level, you guessed it, we still have a few Nerrrds shirts left!

What else will you find in there?  Who knows?  There could be a small child at the bottom.  Those bags are massive.

HOW TO WIN: Just send an e-mail to info@click-comm.com and tell us what you were bummed the most about missing at Comic-Con. Was it the Cowboys & Aliens or Green Lantern panel or seeing the cast of The Avengers? You tell us your biggest woe and what size shirt you’d like. (Your options are WM, WL, ML, MXL, MXXL, and they run a little small)

We will draw the winner on Friday and get that mailed out to you for next week!

Now go check out all the Comic-Con news stories you can find. Those writers worked HARD last week.

“Ready are you? What know you of ready? A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind”… to survive Comic-Con.

Navigating Comic-Con International in San Diego takes the training and discipline of a Jedi knight. In 2009, there were approximately 126,000 attendees, 400 events over four days and over 900 exhibitors present. You will need patience, discipline, the Force as your ally, and should heed these wise words from a galaxy far, far away:

“Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival”
and ensure that all your travel details, hotel accommodations and even restaurant reservations if you have a large group are booked and confirmed before you arrive in San Diego. Last minute accommodation is nearly impossible to find and rooms can go for hundreds of dollars a night. “Republic credits are no good out here.”

“A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge”
by planning your itinerary in advance. Check out the official program* and decide what panels you’d like to see and when you plan to meet up with friends and colleagues. Allow extra time for getting to and from each destination. Ideally, explore and buy exclusive items in the Exhibit Hall on Preview Night or before the weekend crowds arrive and you are thrown “into the garbage chute, fly boy” with the walls closing in.

* A complete schedule of Star Wars- related events at Comic-Con is now available at StarWars.com.

“The Jundland Wastes are not to be traveled lightly” so don’t forget to pack essentials including your mobile device, charger, sunscreen, sunglasses and other protective gear for the long outdoor lines, as well as mints, hand sanitizer, band-aids for blisters, a notebook for autographs and business cards for networking.

“Only what you take with you” may help stave off hunger and dehydration.  Bring snacks to keep your energy up while walking around the booths and waiting for panels as drinks and food can be very expensive inside the convention center. Once the hunger pains set in, even “Bantha fodder” will start to look good.

“Tell Jabba I’ve got his money” and have the cash you need before you arrive on the convention floor.  Many smaller vendors deal in cash only and the ATMs are known to have long lines that can stretch to the second moon of Endor.

“Not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest or teleport me off this rock” will you be able to avoid the long lines for popular panels and that infamous entrance to Hall H.  Bring an iPod, PSP, books or any other form of portable entertainment that can help pass time.

“The possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1.”
If you need to move quickly within the Exhibit Hall, avoid cutting through the center of any aisle for “once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny” with bottle-necked crowds.  Instead, move along the perimeters of the aisles and then head into your destination aisle for speed and ease.

“Boy, it’s lucky you have these compartments”
to carry home your Comic-Con exclusive swag.  Bring poster tubes and bags to carefully carry this year’s Imperial-class goodies. For Star Wars fans, that could include the 30th anniversary Empire Strikes Back Insider commemorative issue with Han Solo in carbonite cover, Hallmark exclusive keepsake ornaments of protocol droids K-3PO and R-3PO and limited edition Darth Vader mini-bust.

“You don’t look so bad to me. You look strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark.” Whether you want to dress up as a Stormtrooper, TIE fighter, a big walking carpet, Princess Leia in the slave bikini (counting the Slave Leias is a popular game at Comic-Con) or even a “stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerf herder,” anything goes when it comes to what you wear. Embrace it and have fun!  For inspiration, you can check out last year’s costumes at the official Star Wars blog. If you’re not dressing up, think layers for those outdoor and indoor lines and remember to wear comfortable shoes. How about a pair of Han Solo sneakers?

In the 80s, Click Communications publicist Jackie Cavanagh dressed up as Princess Leia-meets-Ballerina Fairy with her little brother Stewart as Yoda in tow.

“You came in here, didn’t you have a plan for getting out?” If you aren’t watching a panel at the end of the day and merely roaming the Exhibit Hall, don’t wait until closing time to leave the convention or you will need to “stabilize your rear deflectors” and “watch for enemy fighters” as thousands of people will try to cross Harbor Drive into the Gaslight district at the same time! Not even Obi-Wan Kenobi will be able to save you.

Man your ships for Comic-Con 2010 and may the Force be with you!
